Jordan Valley Big Loop Rodeo

Third full weekend in May, every year · Jordan Valley Rodeo Grounds

The real thing — a 50-plus-year buckaroo tradition famous for big-loop roping, where ropers throw 20-foot loops from horseback the way Great Basin cowboys always have. Ranch families from three states, a parade, dances, and a town that quadruples for the weekend.

The unofficial calendar

March–June: Owyhee River season — rafts stage at Rome as the snowmelt runs.
May: Big Loop Rodeo weekend — the town’s great gathering.
June–September: Milky Way season; the darkest skies in the lower 48 and the Perseids in August.
October–January: chukar and big-game seasons fill the cafe with hunters and dogs.
Year-round: brown trout on the lower Owyhee, and quiet.
